me

I am professor in Industrial Design at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design) in Stockholm, where I mostly am responsible for the education on the master level.
I also work with management of Designfakulteten, D! which is the Swedish Faculty for Design Research and Research Education, and I am currently a member of the Swedish Research Council’s committee for artistic research and artistic developmental work (abbreviation KFoU, VR in Swedish).
I also hold an affiliated professorship in in the subject area design methods with emphasis at early product development at The Royal Institute of Technology (KTH, ITM).

My research has focus on design methods and processes that lead to innovative product design. I am especially interested in co-design where prospective users and other stakeholders are active.

My explorations concern how we can create proposals for artefacts that will be regarded as meaningful by future users and other stakeholders. Basically this has two sides. One is the creative part, the design processes and methods. The other is the use aspect; the meaning people attribute artefacts in specific contexts and related to activities. Co-operative, co-creative and human-centred design approaches combine these two concerns since participants in the process co-create knowledge about, and can show, how future use can be in order to be regarded as meaningful.
I have created some publications and a video on co-operative design approaches (also here below).

I'm also part owner of the design consultancy Andersson & Westerlund in Stockholm.

My background is in industrial design. I hold a PhD from KTH and I graduated with a MFA in industrial design 1985 at Konstfack (University College of Arts, Crafts and Design). Together with Peter Johansson I ran the design consultancy Industridesignbyrån in Stockholm from 1985 until 1997.

Previously I was a professor in design at the School of Design at the Linnæus University, (Lnu) in the south east of Sweden.
1996-2009 I worked as a researcher at HCI, CSC, KTH. One great co-operative design research projects I was engaged in was interLiving. Some other projects were the EU funded projects NEPOMUK and MonAmi, the K-project, Garden of Knowledge, and Daphne. I also ran quite a lot of co-operative workshops which is one foundation for my PhD thesis, Design Space Exploration.
The HCI department is at the School for Computer Science and Communication at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden.
1993-2001 I was a Senior Lecturer in graphic technology at Konstfack in Stockholm, the department for Graphic Design & Illustration.
